Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be a member of the White Lake Yacht Club to take sailing classes?
No you do not. Sailing classes are open to the community. We would encourage you to become a member, either a family or junior membership, so that you can enjoy our club, including all of the social and sailing events we have throughout the summer! For more information please visit the WLYC website www.WLYC.org
What should my child bring to sailing class?
All sailors are required to bring and wear a US Coast Guard approved life jacket and non slip shoes. Other items to bring to class may include a hat, sun screen, swim suit, towel, sun glasses, and jacket or sweatshirt.
Do I have to have my own boat?
No. The White Lake Sailing School has a fleet of 11 Optimist Prams, and 5 JY 15’s. The boats are used during sailing lessons, and can also be used by sailing students for Thursday races and Sunday Junior series and WMYSA regattas through a lease program.
Are classes canceled due to rain, heavy wind or other weather conditions?
Typically not. Our instructors will do their best to keep everyone busy doing sailing related activities when the weather does not cooperate. These activities may include knot tying, sailing games, word games with sailing terms, sailing movies……we try to keep it sailing related.
What if I/my child miss a class during a session?
We do not refund for missed sessions unless accommodations are made prior to the start of that week’s Session.
How will I/my child know how what is being learned in the session?
We have objectives for each level. Each sailor will receive an evaluation card and certificate at the end of the Session registered. If signed up for multiple sessions, Instructors will provide verbal evaluation and written evaluation card will be provided upon last Session completed.
